Because a healthy smile lasts a lifetime!
Your teeth are an important part of your body and keeping them clean helps keep your mouth and your body healthy. By taking care of your teeth, eating a balanced diet, and visiting the dentist regularly, you can have healthy teeth and an attractive smile throughout your entire life.
How often should I visit the dentist?
The Canadian Dental Association recommends regular check ups every six months for most individuals. Regular check ups are essential to maintaining good oral health. The check up allows the dentist to diagnose any problems, and to take preventive action to stop these problems before they develop.
What happens when I visit the dentist? At your check up, you will receive a thorough cleaning by the dental hygienist. This cleaning removes tartar (the hard deposit that forms on your teeth). The Hygienist scales this tartar off using special instruments. Scaling is the only way to remove tartar from your teeth; it can not be removed with a tooth brush. The hygienist or dental assistant will also perform a rubber cup polish to clean and smooth the surfaces of your teeth. This will be followed by a fluoride treatment. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by reversing the early stages of tooth decay.
During your check up the dentist will perform a complete oral examination. This examination assesses the health of your teeth, gums and other oral structures. The dentist will use other aids such as digital radiography and intra oral cameras to assess the health of your teeth.
But my teeth feel fine!
Dental cavities and periodontal disease (bone loss) start off asymptomatic. This means when the disease is small and in its early stages, it can be painless and go unnoticed. Regular examinations and cleanings lead to early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of future progression of cavities and bone loss. Please do not wait until your mouth hurts to seek treatment. Putting off dental check ups can result in more extensive treatment such as root canals or even tooth extraction.
